Why I Chose to Select the Sex of my Child

I have read numerous accounts as to the ethical issues related to selecting the sex of your baby.
Some of the arguments make sense but I believe that in some cases it is necessary to ensure that you have a child of a certain sex. In my case, it was an act of desperation and not just mere preference. I currently have 2 children, one boy and one girl. My son, who is now 8 years of age, is a growing up to be a perfectly healthy child. He is active and his smile literally lights up my world. My daughter is now 4 years of age and until last summer she was also a healthy young baby. However, she began feeling extremely ill and had an extremely high fever. We took her to many doctors but they were unable to tell us what the problem was. Finally, one doctor diagnosed her as having leukemia. I felt as though my entire world was turned upside down.

We had spoken to the doctor about the options that we had and he mentioned that she would require a bone marrow transplant if she was to have any chance of survival. However, the bone marrow donor had to be an almost exact match. He proposed that we have another child, a daughter to be specific, who would be genetically altered so that she could donate bone marrow to her sister. This was also necessary since the doctor advised that umbilical cord fluid that could be taken during the pregnancy would also increase my daughter’s chances of fighting this illness. My husband and I decided to use preimplantation genetic diagnosis to choose the se of our baby and to ensure that she would be healthy and a perfect match for her sister. We are now parents of two baby girls and a son and we are hoping that our youngest daughter is the answer to our prayers.
