There are some reasons why people gain weight that are not surprising to anyone such as when someone always asks for and eats seconds or thirds at the dinner table. It is also not surprising to anyone that the person who has a passion for decadent desserts and indulges in that passion on a consistent basis gains weight. What is surprising is that people who are careful about what they eat end up gaining weight. It is also surprising when people say they eat what they have always eaten and never gained weight before and now they are gaining weight.

One surprising way to gain weight is by not getting enough sleep. Your body functions better when it gets an adequate amount of sleep at night. When your body is experiencing physiological stress or is biochemical off balanced by lack of sleep, the result is that you store fat better. When you lack proper sleep you are also stressed and when people get stressed they tend to overeat. Most people need to have eight full hours of restful sleep each night in order for their bodies to function properly. Not everyone needs that much sleep though so to find out how much sleep your body needs try adding 15 extra minutes each night until you find the amount of sleep that makes you feel refreshed in the morning and that is the amount of sleep that is right for your body. The amount your body needs may change with age and with lifestyle changes.
Another surprising reason for weight gain is stress. We live in a society in which stress is a fact of life and we tend to expect stress at work, at home, in our relationships and so what we expect we tend to take for granted. We may not even be aware of exactly how much stress we are under each day. Our bodies have a “fight-or-flight” response to stress that is a biochemical process where the metabolism slows down and chemical such as cortisol, leptin, and other hormones are excreted and these chemicals can lead to fat deposits in the abdominal region. So if you are under a lot of stress and you are eating normal and exercising regularly but find yourself gaining fat in your abdominal area, stress may be your culprit.
Certain medications are responsible for another surprising way that people can gain weight. Prescription medications for the treatment of depression, mood disorders, blood pressure, diabetes, and migraines have all been found to cause weight gain in some individuals. Other medications that have resulted in weight gain are oral contraceptives, steroids, and hormone replacement therapy medications. Some drugs increase your appetite, other alter the way fat is stored and some drugs change the way insulin levels react. Not all drugs have the same side effects to all who take them.
