Body mass index (BMI) is used to assess a person’s status regarding if they are obese or not. BMI is used to estimate body fat mass. BMI is not accurate when used to measure body builders and women who are pregnant. To arrive at BMI you divide the person’s mass by the square of his or her height, which is expressed in metric:

Metric: BMI = kilograms / meters2 (meters squared).

A BMI of 30.0 to 34.9 is considered to be class I obesity.
A BMI of 35.0 to 39.9 is considered to be class II obesity and a BMI of 40.0 and over is considered to be class III obesity.

Childhood obesity is defined as a BMI greater than 95th percentile. The two factors affecting childhood obesity appear to be a change in diet and a decrease in physical activity. When a child is considered to be obese the health treatments usually include lifestyle interventions and behavior modifications. Medications have not been approved for use in children for obesity.

If you are obese and have been told that you need to lose weight because of health risks and you want to lose the weight fast but safely here are a few tips that will help you to achieve that goal.

Water:

The first tip is to drink plenty of water because water is just what your body craves. Water has many functions within your body including that it helps to flush out toxins. Water also discourages you from overeating. Water is the perfect drink because it can help fill you up so you eat less and water contains zero calories! Start your day with a full class of cold water and have a glass of water before each meal so that you will eat less.

Fruit:

Fresh fruit is your friend. Chose fresh fruit over processed and canned fruit, which usually contains sugar and you, will take in fewer calories. Fresh fruits have more fiber than processed and canned fruits and are therefore more beneficial for you regarding your weight loss goal. Your body needs fiber to function properly and fresh fruit is a natural way to get your fiber.

Eating Behavior:

One common problem obese individuals have is that they eat motivated by feelings. Feelings such as anxiety, anger, sadness, even happiness can make a person eat. If feelings are making you eat speak to someone about it and learn how to cope with your feelings without turning to food.

Some people eat when they are bored. If you find yourself eating out of boredom, find something else to do to occupy your hands such as crafting. If you are bored try doing some physical activity like going for a walk, working out on a stationary bike or playing tennis with your buddy.

You should only eat when you are hungry.

Snacks:

Snacking in between meals is not a good idea when you are trying to lose weight. If you find that you get too hungry between meals try snacking on vegetables, or drink a full glass of water.

Calories:

When trying to lose weight it is important to count calories because we gain weight when we take in more calories than we burn (or use). Most packaged foods have the calories right on the packaging.

Foods to avoid when you are losing weight because they are high on calories are:

The worst thing you can do when trying to lose weight is to skip meals, especially breakfast. Breakfast is how your body jumpstarts the metabolism that is needed to burn the calories you consume each day.

Bitter chocolates have less sugar so if you must indulge in chocolate go for the dark bitter chocolate. Make sure you limit how much you eat because even though they have less sugar bitter chocolate still contains cream.

Eat a variety of food from each food group each day.

Eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. Breakfast is a very important meal and should not be skipped.

Do not avoid carbohydrates when dieting, but limit them to only 50% of your diet.

30% of your diet should be proteins.

Fats should only make up 15% to 20% of your diet.

When choosing meat, pick white meat instead of red.

Go for multiple smaller meals instead of three large meals when trying to lose weight. Time your meals 3 to 4 hours apart.

Getting to a healthier weight for your height and age should be the goal for any treatment plan for someone struggling with obesity. Your health can start to improve with just a 10% to 15% body weight loss. That equates to about a 10 to 20 pound loss for someone who weighted 200 pounds at the start of the treatment. Slow and steady weight loss is the healthiest and safe way to lose weight. A rule of thumb is to shoot for a 1 to 2 pound a week weight loss.

Your doctor can help you design a weight loss treatment plan that will help you to achieve a goal of 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss a week. Your treatment plan may be a combination of prescription medication, improved diet, and exercise. Weight-loss surgery is usually not suggested until all other efforts are exhausted.

Your doctor will likely suggest that counseling be a part of your treatment plan, especially if you use food to cope with anxiety, boredom, depression or loneliness. Counseling can help you to learn new skills to deal with your feelings and the result will be that you will stop using food to deal with these feelings.

You will be more successful if your long-term goal is to achieve better health rather than a weight goal. The treatment should include lifestyle changes that should include behavior changes especially when it comes to eating. Give your lifestyle changes at least 6 months before moving on to more drastic weight loss measures.

Medicines for weight loss:

Weight loss medicines work differently depending on the medicine. Some weight loss medicines work by making you feel fuller sooner, others limit your body’s ability to absorb fat, and still others control the urge to binge eat.

Weight Loss Surgery:

Weight loss surgery is done to reduce the size of the stomach and to limit how many calories your intestines can absorb.

Changing How You Eat:

In order to lose weight obese individuals must learn to change how they eat from taking in fewer calories each day to eating at a table instead of in front of the TV. It may also involve changing eating habits like grazing and learning how to eat at specific times.

Changing What You Eat:

It is not enough to reduce your caloric intake daily, you must also change what types of food you eat. Low-calorie diets should only be used under strict doctor supervision and are not usually advised for obese people who are trying to lose weight in a healthy fashion.

A registered dietician or nutritionist can help you to design a healthy diet for weight loss. Your meals should be balanced, and nutritious. You should have a weekly meal plan that includes all food groups and contain a variety of color.

Never skip meals, as you will lose weight faster by keeping your metabolism charged by eating breakfast and then eating every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day. Never eat late (after 8p), as this will not allow for the calories to be burned off before going to bed.

A person who is severely obese has a serious health condition that can lead to an early death. Obesity is when the individual is 20% heavier than what his or her ideal weight is considered to be. Severe obesity is when the individual is 100 pounds overweight. It is believed that severe obesity may be the result of biochemical, physiologic, and genetic or inherited influences that affect weight maintenance.

What are the contributing factors for obesity?

The contributing factors for obesity are cultural, environmental, psychological and socioeconomic influences.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, 2001; an energy imbalance contributes to obesity and also eating too many calories that does not get balanced out by enough physical activity. The U.S. Surgeon General’s call to action also said that body weight is the result of behavior, culture, genes, metabolism, and socioeconomic status. Because behavior and environment play such a huge role in the problem, they are the areas in which both prevention and treatment must concentrate on.

Weight management is a balancing act with the number of calories from beverages and food on one side and the calories going out due to body functions and the physical activity you do.

Genetics can also affect obesity because genes can directly cause a person to be obese such as in the disorders, Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. Genes alone do not determine obesity but genes and behavior can. Genetics may increase a person’s susceptibility for obesity but outside factors such as consuming more food than is necessary and too little physical ability.

Other factors that can contribute to obesity include certain diseases such as Cushing’s disease and polycystic ovary syndrome. Drugs can also contribute such as antidepressants that can cause weight gain.

Why be concerned?

Approximately 300,000 deaths occur each year in the United States that can be directly related to obesity. Poor diet and lack of physical activity caused 400,000 deaths in the U.S. in the year 2000 that is 16% of the deaths that year as compared to tobacco being the cause of 18% of all deaths that year.

According to a recent study the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is catching up to tobacco as the top underlying and preventable cause of death in the United States.

You can’t get more serious than knowing that if you continue to be obese you are running the risk of dying. This is definitely cause for concern for anyone considered being overweight or obese.
