Newborns Facts
For most married couples, having your first child is a dream that has finally been materialized. Then, reality sinks in and you are faced with even more challenges. You find yourself having to learn new tricks and techniques to care for your little one. Whereas you used to live your life vicariously, you now have to be this extremely responsible person who has to plan your daily schedule. From the moment you hear your baby’s cries in the morning, up to the time you have to tuck him into bed at night, you find every minute has been filled with either fulfilling your other responsibilities or taking care of your infant. You eventually wear yourself out and you may feel that your family life may eventually pay the big price for it.
This, of course, does not have to be the case. When it comes to caring for your baby, you need to know the basics. Yes, parenthood is work. It is especially more challenging for those who are going through it for the very first time. While the baby in your arms looks very angelic, the scenario takes a whole new turn when you are faced with the details of caring for him. Just thinking about diaper changes, frequent feeding times, burping and spit-ups, and worrying about whether you’re able to handle this too delicate body are enough to send you panicking.
There’s no need to go to pieces. You just have to know what your baby needs. Of course, first in line is his health. Make sure your newborn receives his vaccines after birth. Also make sure to take care of their umbilical cord. This is a sensitive area that must be cleaned properly. Soak a cotton ball in alcohol (just make sure that it’s not too strong) and carefully wipe the spot clean. Allow air exposure so that the stump can heal and fall off naturally. Gentle is the key word here. Even during their bath time, only use products that are especially made for babies. Refrain from buying scented items which may contain ingredients that are exceedingly harsh for his skin.
When it comes to their skin, frequently change their diapers to avoid rashes. For soft and smooth skin, lanolin and aloe are the best ones to use. When you apply oil on them, make sure to rub this between your palms first. When trying to cool down his skin, refrain from using too much powder because the small particles may cause allergies and infections when inhaled by your baby. Just make sure to clothe them in items that made of pure cotton and are ready to remove in case they throw up their milk.
When grooming your little one, use a damp wash cloth on your baby’s ear in place of the traditional cotton buds. Cut his fingernails once a week when he’s asleep. After every feeding, wipe the inside of his mouth to keep gums healthy for when his first set of teeth come out. With these tips, you’ll see your baby grow up to be strong and healthy.
